Peanut

This plant belongs to the legume family, like lentils and chickpeas, so it is not a nut but a legume.

  • Description

Arachis hypogaea, commonly known as peanut, caguate, cacahuate or peanut, is a legume of the Fabaceae family (fabaceae) whose pod fruits (popularly associated by their morphology to nuts) contain seeds appreciated in gastronomy.

Foodstuffs such as peanut butter or cream are obtained from this fruit, and its oil is extracted, which is widely used in the cuisine of India and Southeast Asia.

In Spain, the seed is consumed raw, fried or roasted, although it is popularly known as "cacahuetes" or "cacaos". In Western Andalusia, they are usually called "avellanitas". In the Canary Islands they are known as "Manises".

The roasted seeds are used to make a coffee substitute.
